in the cracks of reality

Updated: Aug 9, 2023

This is a post discussing how I am using alternative realities and monsters from beyond in my science fiction world that I am building right now. The idea is that demons, ghosts and eldritch horrors are all manifestations of forces and creatures from one of the realities beyond ours.

In my science fiction world our universe is only one of many, its not a Marvel multiverse, its not Narnia or DnD Dimensions that you can travel to through a glowing portal. The worlds beyond ours is constantly rubbing up against our thin reality and anyplace where the thing that binds our reality weakens, that is where the monsters from the deep is crawling up. Reality is a stable thing that's not easy to break but it gets thinner whenever a place is experiencing death and destruction. In times of sudden death of multiple lives and especially sentient life, that's where the membrane of reality gets stretched out and thin enough for horrors to come in. This is used by wielders of the dark arts. They use these places in time and space to lure power from the void. Sometimes they use their thaumaturgy in places of war, death and misery and sometimes they bring it in by sacrifice of unwilling victims.

Some places are infected of more cracks in the reality than others, the thing about the horrors from the deep places is that they thrive where death and destruction is prominent. That is a downward spiral that if nobody stops the anomalies it will spread and can sometimes infect whole planets or star systems.

That is what has happen on Earth, dark anomalies, monsters and other eldritch horrors have been plaguing the planet for thousands of years but the last hundred or so it's been getting worst. All life on Mars and Venus was destroyed by the anomalies over 10.000 years ago and its a bit of a mystery why earth survived so long and what exactly happened to the other planets. And this is why humans are being migrated off their home planet, out into the great unknown.
