I have always been inspired by TV, radio, books, and comics, wanting to be a part of another, more fantastical world as a kid. I wanted to be marooned like Robinson Crusoe, to be a superhero and an adventurer in a fantasy world. But I never wanted to be a copy of an existing character. I did not want to be Batman or Bilbo; I wanted to be my own character that came from my imagination. And that idea of being inspired but creating my own version of something has always followed me. When I cook, my wife is infuriated sometimes, as I only take "inspiration" from recipes and always make my own version. As a game master in roleplaying games, I almost never run a ready-built adventure or even a ready-made world.
And that takes me to why I am writing this post. I have always had some worlds that I am building, for my roleplaying games and for my own enjoyment. These worlds live in documents on my Google Drive, and some parts of them end up in the games I run for my friends. But I want them to grow into something else, and I want others to be able to get inspired by them. So the logical step is to share them and the process of creating the worlds with everyone on the internet.
I have two main worlds that I am working on right now, one fantasy and one Science Fiction:
Project "from Below & Above"
A science fiction world with some cosmic horror elements. Set in a parallel or alternative reality to our own. It is a world where aliens exist, and something else is trying to rip our universe asunder. Humans have been exiled from Earth due to the eldritch corruption that is no longer under control. Here, humans find what has been lurking in the void above and in the dark dimensions below.
Project "Fable world"
I just started outlining and brainstorming this one. The main idea is that all mammals are humanoid intelligent beings, acting as the fantasy races of the world. There are no mammal animals, so all the carnivores hunt birds, fish, and reptiles, basically. I have been thinking of adding dinosaurs to fill the niches of the mammal animals, but I am not sure. That would change the original theme that I was going for.
